As members of the Fort Collins Community it is important that we get our voice heard by city council when it comes to changes they want to make in our community. If you are not familar with the current issue that we are facing please read on and get involved. Basically, City Council has been conducting a of the “East Side & West Side” old town neighborhoods in with the intent on changing the design regulation requirements on all remodels and new builds. They are trying to significantly reduce the size of remodeling homeowners are allowed to do on their homes. The information below is from teh City of Fort Collins’ website. Please review the slide show and see if you will be affected by these proposed changes. If you live in one of these locations I highly encourage you to show up at the meeting on Monday the 15th and get your voice heard.

City Council Work Session
Staff prepared a final report which was presented to City Council on August 24, 2010 (download the study to your left). The study summarized the key findings and concluded with potential implementation options. Council was asked which, if any, of the implementation options were preferred to change development standards or review process to further address compatibility.

What Did We Hear?
To view the work session in its entirety, go to
Cable 14’s video on demand and watch “City Council Work Session 8/24.”

  • Most Councilmembers agreed there is a problem to solve; meaning changes to the City’s current standards and/or review processes are warranted.

  • Most of the new construction and/or new additions built are well designed and contribute positively to the character of the neighborhood.

  • Council does not want to hinder further improvements with too much regulation.

  • The issue is not only about size; the design and historical significance of structures should also be considered.

What Happens Next?

City Council will hold a work session on November 23 to discuss the options identified for potential Land Use Code changes. A Planning and Zoning Board recommendation is scheduled for December 9, and Council will consider adopting any changes on January 4, 2011.
